The Gregory Pergola

On Sunday, November 13, 2011, the  Gregory  Memorial Pergola was dedicated to the Southern Virginia Botanical Gardens as its first major garden construction.

.

Thanks to a gift from Agnes Gregory of Halifax, the Gregory Memorial Pergola now stands in the Lawn Section of the garden located at Edmunds Park in South Boston. The style is modeled after a similar pergola located in Witherspoon Rose Cultural Center in Durham, N.C., according to SVBG founding President Charles Stallard.

Friends and family gathered at 3 p.m. for a short ceremony dedicating the memorial to deceased family members, Kelsie “Sam” Gregory, husband of Agnes, and two grandchildren lost at an early age to illness, D. Marie Pulliam and Heather L. Pulliam.

The Rev. Bill Wilkins presided over the ceremony and was supported by the Color Guard of Boy Scout Troop 410.

The pergola, constructed by McDannald Construction of South Boston, will be available for weddings and other ceremonies by April 2012 when landscaping around it will be completed, Stallard said.

Old garden roses will be placed to either side with other landscaping nearby.

Dedication of the Gregory Memorial Pergola sets the stage for other memorial gifts that have been made and are anticipated in the near future, he added.

The garden board of directors has adopted guidelines for acceptance of memorial gifts in the form of benches, plants, trees or even entire garden sections.

Anyone interested in making a donation or discussing a memorial for the garden should contact SVBG current President Jonathan Chandler at 434-575-5370.
